Overcoming Panic with the Kindness of a Stranger: A Car Wash Story

  • Stories

This is such a heartwarming story! It beautifully shows the kindness of strangers and how even small acts of compassion can make a huge difference during moments of panic:

The other day, I decided to take my car through a touchless car wash since it was covered in salt. It’s something I’ve done plenty of times before, but as I waited in line, I noticed another car in the other lane looking stuck. That’s when the panic started creeping in. I kept thinking, What if my car gets trapped too?

It was my turn to go, and I had cars lined up behind me. I’d already paid, but the panic became overwhelming. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. So, I got out of my car, walked to the car behind me, and asked if they could back up and let me leave. I explained I was having a panic attack and even offered them my paid car wash.

Turns out, it was a mother and her teenage son. Without hesitation, the mom looked at me and said, “Would you like me to go in the car wash with you? Maybe that will help you feel better.” I was holding up the line and feeling embarrassed, but I said yes. Her son drove her car, and she hopped into my tiny two-seater Miata to ride with me.

As we went through the car wash, she just talked to me—about Christmas, how she had to sell her house, and how her son thought my car was cool. Meanwhile, I was sitting there shaking like a leaf, but her calm and friendly conversation made it bearable. Before I knew it, the car wash was over. My car was fine, I was fine, and I dropped her back off with her son.

It was one of the most wholesome and unexpected acts of kindness I’ve ever experienced.

Now, I’m hoping to find her through my town’s Facebook page. I’d love to give her some grocery and car wash money to thank her for being so understanding and generous. Sometimes, the world surprises you in the best ways.

The lesson here is that moments like this remind us of the goodness in people and how important it is to give yourself grace during overwhelming times. You didn’t let fear completely win—you found a way through it with the help of someone kind. That’s a step forward in building confidence and self-esteem. Always celebrate those wins, no matter how small they seem.
